I have always had affection for architecture. Upon being introduced to Organic Design I seem to have rekindled this fondness which has given me a creative enticement to explore different ideas. The term organic design is most commonly applied to architecture, but it is also found in other aspects of design.
The term "Organic Architecture" was invented by the architect, Frank Lloyd Wright (1867-1959). Although the word "organic" has become a catchword for something that occurs naturally, when connected to architecture it takes on a new meaning.
“Organic design is a philosophy of design for buildings and places which is driven by several ideals.” (organicARCHITECT Ltd. , n.d.)
Researching these ideals I sought out that the philosophy includes the need for ‘good design’; meaning that form and function are one. The idea was not to design according to style but according to function which allowed the style to emerge. Its approach to design captures the spirit of nature, where the finished product is seen as a whole. (eiffel, 2009)

I chose organic architecture mainly because of the harmonious relationship between something man made and something natural. It uses the reinterpretation of nature as curves as a signature in much the same way that modern architecture uses straight lines.

It is not a style of imitation, because if looked at closely no architect has built forms which were representative of nature. Instead organic architecture is produced just as if they have sprout from the very environment.
Modern organic buildings are never linear or rigidly geometric. Instead, the designs sometimes break the rules of balance and symmetry, where wavy lines and curved shapes suggest natural forms.

Thus for my final product, just as Wright coined his philosophy, I want to achieve a certain harmony between human habitation and the natural world by taking into account aspects of the surroundings so that the design becomes part of a unified and interrelated composition.
However Modern Organic Design has also looked towards nature as a primary source of inspiration. Modern Organic designers are now being classified as artists with a design direction pulled from the environment. Thus the term organic is being used as its actual connotation, where designers are being inspired from colour palettes, patterns and materials from nature to create furniture and interior designs.
Consequently I am open to inspire my final product from anything which is organic, whether I am trying to create a cohesive composition or if I simply want to take direct elements from nature itself.
