Together In The Storm

Together In The Storm by Leonid Afermov
Leonid Afremov (1955), is a Russian–Israeli modern impressionistic artist who works mainly with a palette knife and oils. His talent achieved its real heights in 1990.

As soon as I saw ‘Together In the Storm’, I was immediately engaged by the use of the rich palette of vivid colours. In my opinion the painting is showing two people under an umbrella that seem to be hurrying to a place of safety due to the intense downpour of rain.

The use of division of colours and overlapping brush strokes without borders or any fine lines helps build up a sense of movement and texture. Through these brushstrokes, which vary from thick to thin, with tiny dabs of light, we see watery reflections just as if it is actually raining and the road is filled with water.

It is incredible how through the brushstrokes, Afremov not only managed to capture the idea of movement through the rain, but also managed to capture movement through the two blurred figures who appear as though they are in a storm.

I really admire the way the artist creates this moment in time where many actions have been captured in stillness. Unfortunately I was unable to find more information on his works of art, especially specific dates to when these works where made.
