Illustration Art | Denis Zilber

Illustration is one of the many forms of art that basically surrounds us everywhere we go.

Illustration art in fact begins with cave paintings where individuals would “illustrate their daily activities” (Fabulous Noble Team, 2012) on the cave walls. The 17th and 18th centuries play an important role in the account of illustration with “etchings, engravings, and lithographs” (Fabulous Noble Team, 2012) being used as a faster method to get their work to a wider audience. However illustration really began during the late 1800s and early 1900s with “illustration appearing in books and magazines.” (Fabulous Noble Team, 2012) During the distressing times of the “two world wars the work of illustrators was centred on propaganda posters and flyers.” (Fabulous Noble Team, 2012)  From the 1970s onwards the development of photography made “illustrations lose its place in the market.” (Fabulous Noble Team, 2012)In fact it wasn’t up until the evolution of software during the late 20th century that has allowed for the re-invention of illustration. The capabilities of such software, has allowed illustrators and graphic artists to start focusing on the digital graphic arts and the continued expansion of the field.

One of these artists who merged perfectly into digital art is Denis Zilber, who I seem to have taken a great interest in. Denis Zilber is an illustrator from Ramat-Gan, Israel. Starting as a graphic designer at the age of 26, he has gradually developed into becoming an illustrator.

His work has a boundless surrealist feel to it, filled with wittiness and peculiar perspectives. Ordinary people with their characters and emotions are his main subjects, placed under different concepts with fantastic colour schemes. This is what inspired me about his work compared to other artists. Each of his characters speaks attitude. He uses perspective and colour to define the mood of each illustration creating an incredibly interesting eye catching piece of art.

In an online interview he is asked on how he creates his characters, to which I found very interesting;

“I start with basic shapes, trying to keep them as simple and clear as possible. The more simple is the shape, the better it reads, the faster it delivers the idea to the viewer. […] I try to add contrast to the shapes […] I also give them some flow using S and C curves, so the characters will have more natural look. Then I pick few of them and start breaking them down, creating interesting poses, adding facial and body details.” (Sly, 2011)

As a result I wish to inspire my final product from different characteristics which Zilber creates in his art works mainly the direct relationship which I create with the audience through colour and perspective just as Zilber creates his compositions between funny and sad, smart and silly, gentle and rude.
